Review of "A Quiet Place - Day One"
Lupita Nyong'o's real emotional journey with her cat. This film is absolutely fantastic. It's thrilling, it's terrifying, and keeps you guessing.
Lupita Nyong'o plays Sam, a woman with terminal cancer. She goes on a trip to Manhattan with her support group, led by Alex Wolff, to see a puppet show. But Sam's real goal is to have a slice of New York pizza one last time, as it brings her joy. Making Sam a terminal cancer patient adds a unique twist to the story. It raises the question: how hard do you fight to live when you're already dying? This is one of the many interesting ideas in Sarnoski's film, but the movie quickly shifts into a basic survival thriller, leaving deeper themes unexplored.
The key question is: how do you make one of the loudest cities in the world go silent? Sarnoski's film tells us that NYC is usually around 90 decibels, setting up the idea of a movie about keeping such a noisy city quiet. But this film doesn’t explore that. We never feel like we’re in a crowded city facing the end of the world because the movie wasn’t filmed in Manhattan. It was shot on soundstages in London, which makes it feel more like a set than a real place.
Sam and her cat, Frodo, are exploring the world when they meet a scared young man named Eric (played by Joseph Quinn from “Stranger Things”). Casting Lupita Nyong’o and Quinn is a big win for "Day One," as their expressive faces tell much of the story. The sound-sensitive aliens are taking over the world, and Nyong’o and Quinn deliver strong performances, using their physical actions and expressions to convey most of the plot.
